St. Gertrude and the Holy Souls

What a beautiful ministry it is to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory (the “Church Suffering”), and how much they need our prayers!

One of the popular prayers that circulates among the faithful, especially with the advent of social media, is the St. Gertrude prayer to release 1,000 souls from purgatory every time the prayer is recited devoutly. Even priests have shared this prayer online.

Here’s the thing: the Church has actually condemned the idea that multiple souls can be released from purgatory by the recitation of a short prayer. It hurts me to tell this to some of you who have been faithfully devoted to this practice for years, because your hearts are all in the right place. (I’ll share a link to those Church documents at the end of this post).

It is so beautiful that you want to pray for the dead, and the prayer itself is beautiful. But there are people reciting this prayer multiple times a day, thinking that this prayer will do more than spending one’s time fulfilling the ordinary requirements for a plenary indulgence (which can only be applied to one soul a day and requires much more time and prayer).

Please don’t feel foolish if you have been doing this yourself—your heart is good and noble and motivated by love! But let us put on the true mind of the Church on this and do our part to liberate others from this and other dubious devotions. The most effective thing we can do for them? Have Masses offered for them and pray the rosary! Sending you all a big hug, Kitty 💝🙏🏻💝

A little money-saving trick

I love a bargain! So when I shop online, I usually check three “add ons” to see if I can get additional discount codes or cash back on the website: Rakuten, Retail-me-not, and Capital One. They are extensions that you can download to your computer or apps on your phone that you can check, and I’ve saved thousands of dollars over the years by using them.

HOWEVER, I recently discovered that Capital One will often send me an email after I visit a site that has a significantly larger discount than the one shown on the app or extension. A recent discount went from 3% cash back to 20%! That’s a big difference, and I was able to add it to items already on sale. If you want to try it out, use my link (I get a referral bonus) to add it to your web browser on your computer or phone: https://capitaloneshopping.com/r/7f8930a2-fd9b-4289-b0d1-18c395d771ec

7 Lessons from Whitewater Rafting
(or How to Remain at Peace When You Are Afraid), by Kitty Cleveland

7 Life Lessons from Whitewater Rafting
(or How to Remain at Peace When You’re Afraid)

by Kitty Cleveland

Years ago I joined some friends in a thrilling whitewater rafting excursion down the frigid Snake River in Jackson Hole, WY. I had rafted down the Nantahala River in North Carolina many times in the past (once getting trapped under the raft), and I’d even rafted this river before in a large raft. But this time was different.

This time I ended up being assigned the front of a little two-person duckie with a wisp of a woman steering in back. Seriously, I easily had about six inches and 60 pounds on her. I hollered out to our fearless leader on the big, safe raft next to us, "Shouldn't I be in the back of this thing?" She assured me that my strength would be needed to power through the danger up ahead. That's when I started praying. Lesson 1: ALWAYS ACKNOWLEDGE GOD FIRST.
