The Art and Ministry of Listening
Years ago, a priest friend told me about a woman who came to his community to ask for help. She ended up sitting with the sisters and talking for eight hours straight. For the first time in her life, she had found people willing to receive her story – she had never been listened to before. Healing happened as a result of that gift of time and attention, a true gift of love.
I received an email this morning from socialite Holly Holden, which had lovely tips for becoming a gracious listener (I know I have room to improve!). I hope this inspires you:
🌸 The Three-Second Pause: Allow a brief, thoughtful pause after someone finishes speaking before jumping in. (Gosh, I need to work on that one!)
🌸 Ask for Feelings, Not Just Facts: Inquire about how an experience felt rather than focusing on rigid details.
🌸 Be a Listening Ear: Resist the urge to jump in with advice or solutions—sometimes a friend simply needs a caring ear, not a cure.
🌸 Give the Gift of Presence: Offer your full, undivided presence by setting aside all distractions, including your cell phone! Letting someone know they have your complete focus is a rare and lovely kindness.
The Forbidden Faux Pas:
No-no: Finishing Sentences: Resist filling in words for a hesitant speaker—offer them a patient pause instead.
No-no: Conversational Redirecting: Avoid immediately steering the focus away from the speaker and onto yourself, i.e: "Oh, that exact same thing happened to me!"
No-no: Mid-Story Correcting: Never interrupt to correct trivial details. Kindness always trumps precision, no matter how smart you think you are!
This Week’s "Lovely Living" Challenge:
When you have a conversation this week, try to keep the spotlight entirely on the other person. Use the three-second pause and ask two follow-up questions about their feelings, without once bringing the story back to yourself.
